Vedic vs Western Astrology: Key Differences

By Pandit Vinay Kumar Sharma · 25 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

If you have only ever read Western horoscopes, your first Vedic chart can be a surprise: your Sun sign may be different, and the chart looks different too. Both systems are traditions with their own logic. Here is how they differ.

New to these terms? See the Vedic astrology glossary.

The main difference: two zodiacs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Zero degrees of Aries always begins at the March equinox. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the fixed stars.

The two zodiacs started out roughly aligned about two thousand years ago. Because of the slow wobble of Earth's axis (precession), they have since drifted apart by about 24 degrees. Jyotish corrects for this with a value called the ayanamsa; the most widely used is the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Why your sign may be different

That 24-degree gap means many people have a different sign in each system. For example, a Sun at 5° Aries in the tropical zodiac is at about 11° Pisces in the sidereal zodiac. If your Sun is early in a Western sign, it is likely to be in the previous sign in Vedic astrology. See our Moon sign vs Sun sign guide for what this means in practice.

Tools unique to Jyotish

Jyotish includes features with no direct Western counterpart. The dasha system divides life into planetary periods. Nakshatras divide the zodiac into 27 finer sections. Traditional practices such as muhurat (choosing auspicious timing) and kundli matching are also part of the Vedic toolkit.

Which one is right?

Neither is a mistake; they measure different things. The tropical zodiac tracks the seasonal cycle, while the sidereal zodiac tracks the stellar background. Practitioners advise using one system consistently. Mixing the rules of one with the chart of the other gives unreliable results. Many people enjoy both, and a Vedic reading can add a new perspective.
