What Is a Vedic Birth Chart?
A Vedic birth chart, called a kundli or janam kundli in India, is a map of the sky at the exact time and place you were born. It is the starting point of every Jyotish reading.
What you need to create one
Three details are essential: your date of birth, your exact time of birth and your place of birth. The place gives the latitude and longitude, and the time is converted to a universal standard using the time zone and daylight saving rules in force at that location on that date. If you were born abroad, mention the city and country so the correct time zone is used.
The main parts of the chart
- Rising sign (Lagna): the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at birth, which sets the chart's 12 houses.
- Moon sign (Rashi): the sign the Moon occupied, central to Vedic interpretation.
- Nakshatra: the lunar mansion of the Moon, one of 27.
- Nine planets (grahas): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
- Twelve houses (bhavas): areas of life such as home, career, marriage and gains.

Chart styles you may see
The chart is drawn as a diagram. In North India a diamond-shaped layout is common, and in South India a square grid. Western-style round wheels also exist. They show the same information, just arranged differently.
What a reading covers
A reading looks at your character and tendencies, then at themes such as relationships, career, finances and health. The dasha periods and current planetary transits are used to discuss timing. A good astrologer presents these as guidance and possibilities, not fixed outcomes.
If you do not know your birth time
Your birth certificate or hospital record usually has it. If it is unavailable, a family member may remember. Without it, the Rising sign and houses can be uncertain, so some astrologers use event-based methods to estimate it. Tell your astrologer what you know, and treat results as less precise.
