What Is Dasha in Astrology? Vimshottari Dasha Explained
If the kundli shows what is possible, the dasha system suggests when. It is the most widely used timing tool in Vedic astrology.
The basic idea
Dasha means 'period'. In the Vimshottari system, your life is divided into planetary periods totalling 120 years. The planet ruling your current period colours the themes you are likely to experience, such as career, relationships or health, according to its placement in your chart.
Mahadasha order and length
- Ketu: 7 years
- Venus: 20 years
- Sun: 6 years
- Moon: 10 years
- Mars: 7 years
- Rahu: 18 years
- Jupiter: 16 years
- Saturn: 19 years
- Mercury: 17 years
The cycle always runs in this order. Which planet you start with depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
Antardasha and sub-periods
Each Mahadasha is divided into smaller Antardashas (sub-periods) ruled by all nine planets in turn. These refine the timing, showing shorter phases of a few months to a few years within the larger period.
How astrologers interpret a dasha
A dasha lord's results depend on its sign, house, strength and relationships in the chart. A strong, well-placed planet tends to deliver its themes more smoothly, while a stressed planet may bring lessons and delays. Transits (the planets' present movement) are then read together with the dasha.
Using dasha for decisions
Dasha can help in choosing the timing of a career move, marriage or major investment, but it is guidance, not a prediction carved in stone. Your own preparation and choices matter just as much.
