Moon Sign vs Sun Sign in Vedic Astrology
Most people know their Sun sign, the one printed in newspaper horoscopes. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign and the Rising sign carry more weight. Here is why.
Sun sign: your sign in Western astrology
Your Sun sign depends on the date of your birth. It describes your core identity and ego in Western astrology, and it is what most daily horoscopes use.
Moon sign: the Vedic starting point
Your Moon sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at birth. Jyotish treats the Moon as the mind and emotions. It sets your nakshatra, which in turn decides the starting point of your dasha timeline. Traditional horoscope columns and compatibility checks in India are based on the Moon sign.
Rising sign (Lagna): the framework
The Rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It determines the 12 houses of the chart, so it shapes how every planet is interpreted. It needs an accurate birth time, because it changes about every two hours.
Why the Vedic and Western signs differ
Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, each sign is shifted by about 24 degrees. Your Vedic Sun sign is often the sign before your Western one, and your Moon sign may also change. Read Vedic vs Western astrology for the details.
How to find yours
You need your birth date, time and place. A Vedic birth chart calculation, or a consultation, will give your Rising sign, Moon sign and nakshatra together. Try not to use a Western calculator for a Vedic reading, as the signs may not match.
