Kundli Matching for Marriage: What Guna Milan Means

By Pandit Vinay Kumar Sharma · 25 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

Before many Indian marriages, families compare the horoscopes of the boy and girl. The traditional method is called Ashtakoot Guna Milan, and it produces a score out of 36. Here is what that score does, and does not, tell you.

The 8 koots and their points

Guna Milan compares the Moon's position (nakshatra and rashi) in both charts across eight categories:

These add up to 36 points.

What is a good score?

Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum for a match to be considered acceptable. Scores of 24 and above are generally regarded as good, and 32 and above as excellent. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, so a low score in those two is usually examined closely.

Beyond the score

Guna Milan looks only at the Moon. A thorough match also compares the full charts: the 7th house and its lord, the strength of Venus and Jupiter, the Manglik status of both partners, and the running dasha periods. A high score with a troubled 7th house deserves attention, while a modest score with strong supporting factors can still be workable.

Using matching wisely

Kundli matching is a traditional tool for guidance. It should sit alongside real-life factors such as values, family, education, health, communication and mutual respect, not replace them. A good astrologer will explain any concerns calmly and suggest practical remedies instead of creating fear.

What you need for a kundli match

You will need the full name, date, exact time and place of birth for both partners. With these, a consultation can cover the Guna score, Manglik check and a broader compatibility reading.
