How to Read Your Kundli: A Beginner's Guide
A kundli, also called a janam kundli or birth chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Vedic astrology uses it to understand your temperament, strengths and the timing of life events. Here is how to make sense of one.
What a kundli is made of
Every kundli is built from three ingredients: 12 houses (areas of life), 12 zodiac signs (rashis) and 9 planets (grahas, including the Moon's nodes Rahu and Ketu). The chart shows which sign rises on the eastern horizon at birth, which planets sit in which houses, and how they relate to each other.
Step 1: Find the ascendant (Lagna)
The ascendant is the sign rising at the moment of birth. It becomes the first house, and the other houses follow in order. Because the Lagna changes roughly every two hours, an accurate birth time matters a great deal. A difference of even 15–20 minutes can change house placements.
Step 2: Understand the 12 houses
- 1st house: self, body, personality
- 2nd: family, speech, savings
- 3rd: courage, siblings, communication
- 4th: home, mother, peace of mind
- 5th: education, children, creativity
- 6th: health, service, competition
- 7th: marriage and partnerships
- 8th: transformation, longevity, sudden events
- 9th: fortune, higher learning, dharma
- 10th: career and public standing
- 11th: gains and networks
- 12th: expenses, losses, foreign lands, spirituality
Step 3: See where the planets sit
Each planet carries a theme: the Sun (soul, authority), Moon (mind, emotions), Mars (energy), Mercury (intellect), Jupiter (wisdom, growth), Venus (relationships, comfort), Saturn (discipline, patience), Rahu and Ketu (ambition and detachment). A planet's meaning is coloured by the house it occupies and the sign it is in. For example, Jupiter in the 5th house is generally read as supportive for education and children.
Step 4: Look at strength and relationships
Astrologers check whether a planet is in its own sign, exalted or debilitated, and which other planets aspect (look at) it. They also study dasha periods, which show when a planet's results are most likely to be felt.
Why a chart reading is more than a checklist
No single planet or house decides your life. A skilled astrologer weighs the whole chart together and explains it as guidance, not destiny. If you would like your own chart explained, prepare your full name, date, exact time and place of birth.
