Hindu Baby Naming by Nakshatra
In many Hindu families, a baby's name begins with a sound linked to the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. The tradition is called Namakarana, and many families abroad also follow it.
How the starting sound is chosen
Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four padas, and each pada is linked to a syllable. The baby's name traditionally begins with the syllable of the pada the Moon occupied at birth. For example, the first pada of Ashwini is associated with the syllable 'Chu'.
The Namakarana ceremony
Namakarana is the naming ceremony. Many families hold it around the 11th or 12th day after birth, though the timing varies with family and regional custom. Families living abroad often choose a convenient date and ask an astrologer for an auspicious muhurat.
What you need to share
- The baby's date, exact time and place of birth
- Family preferences, such as language, meaning or religion-specific names
- Parents' and grandparents' names, if you want to honour them
Choosing a name that works in your country
Many families look for a traditional name that is also easy to spell and pronounce in the country where they live. A good astrologer will offer several names starting with the right sound so that you can pick one that suits both traditions.
A modern approach
Some parents use the nakshatra sound for a formal name and a different everyday name. The astrological name can also be used as the spiritual or religious name. Do whatever feels right for your family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the astrological name the legal name?
Not necessarily. Families choose how to use it, as a legal name, a middle name or a ceremonial name.
What if the birth time is not exact?
The starting sound can change with the pada, so share the time as accurately as possible.
Can this be done remotely?
Yes. Birth details can be shared online and the names discussed over a video call.
